My first design project situated in this portfolio consists of a three garment look inspired by gender subversion. Before embarking on this new design project, I reflected on my learnings from the previous work, and which aspects from my learnings I could develop further. My identity as a designer contextualises why I feel drawn to the subversion of gender in fashion outcomes.
To give myself greater knowledge on the subject of gender performance, I undertook research into the concepts within queer theory, as well as masculine and feminine stereotypes. Subversive, inversive and non-gendered fashion is the area of design that I wish to explore and focus my practice within, and this design project is an extension of this intention.
When I began conceptualising the specific garments for this project, I considered the gender connotations of archetypes, fabrics and proportional aspects. Before I could begin exploring these design aspects, however, I had to find suitable research and inspiration images. I looked at traditional military garments, as well as garment archetypes which had heavy gender associations to inform my imagery. I researched luxury iterations of some military archetypes, as these were subversive in another respect, and I have detailed the imageboard below.
